Twin bombs in Nigeria's Borno state kill seven and injure 12
By Lanre Ola MAIDUGURI, Nigeria - At least seven people died and 12 were injured when twin bomb blasts by suspected Boko Haram militants struck a wedding party in northeast Nigeria's Borno state on Friday, locals said. The explosions, two minutes apart, hit the remote town of Tashan Alade at about 6 a.m. local time -- hours before new president Muhammadu Buhari vowed in his inauguration speech that the "mindless, godless" militants would be defeated. Thousands have been killed and millions displaced during the Islamist group's six-year insurgency. ...
New Nigerian president seeks to crush "godless" Boko Haram
Algeria's ruling parties shore up backing of ailing president
By Julia Payne ABUJA (Reuters) - New Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari promised on Friday to eradicate the "mindless, godless" militants of Boko Haram and rescue hundreds of women and children held captive, including 200 girls taken from the town of Chibok a year ago. In his inaugural address as elected leader of Africa's most populous nation and biggest oil producer, Buhari also painted a picture of an economy in crisis after a collapse in the price of crude, which accounts for the bulk of state revenue. "The armed forces will be fully charged with prosecuting the fight against Boko Haram," the 72-year-old former military ruler announced.
By Lamine Chikhi ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria's main ruling parties are reinforcing their backing for ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika as lower world oil prices eat into the budget of the North African OPEC state, analysts said on Friday. The parties' reshuffle follows a cabinet shake-up of new ministers by Bouteflika. On Thursday, Abdelkader Bensaleh, 74, resigned from the National Rally for Democracy or RND, the second ruling party alongside National Liberation Front or FLN, which has led the country since 1962 independence from France.
